it should be clear by now that DC will never be a state, no matter if it's right or wrong.
suggestion: make the district of columbia a maryland congressional district for federal elections only. DC would get a vote in the US house as part of MD's delegation. DC residents would vote for MD's US senators and have their presidential votes counted into MD's total. both parties get something: dems get a house vote and greater chance of electing 2 senators (which they've done anyway every time since they last lost in 1980), but they lose at least 2 electoral votes. without some such compromise, the GOP will always find a way to block representation for citizens who live in the capital.
