JC Penney CEO Ron Johnson spoke out this morning in defense of the company’s new partnership with Ellen DeGeneres. The conservative group One Million Moms has called for a boycott against the store for “jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon,” but both JC Penney and DeGeneres have defended the partnership. Johnson told CBS News that he sees no controversy.... [more]

using religious liberty to suppress women's liberty

GOP candidates have picked up the ball put into play by a group of conservative catholic bishops to attack president obama by claiming he attacks religious liberty by keeping birth control available to women who want it.

a few days ago i posted an article from catholic democrats that gives some of the history of that particular smear of obama. here's an excerpt:
The bishops' "religious liberty" campaign derived its origins in part from a 2009 conservative political document called "The Manhattan Declaration," written by Princeton Professor Robert George and endorsed by a broad range of Republican activists. George was a leading architect of what can only be labeled a campaign of hate speech toward candidate Obama in 2008, repeatedly labelling him as "the most pro-abortion candidate of either major political party in history." Archbishop Dolan and several other bishops with strong anti-Obama views signed that document, which claimed that there was a growing assault on religious liberty in America because Democrats refused to adopt Republican views on reversing Roe-vs-Wade and other conservative postures. Some bishops have now signed-on wholesale to the Republican view that President Obama is somehow out to get Catholics, despite his having a cabinet with an unprecedented number of Catholics....
on jstor.org i found a review of a 1993 book by professor george. consider this excerpt:
...he is consistently respectful of his opponents and careful in his attempts to present their arguments. ...george scrupulously avoids rhetorical excesses in favor of considered argument.
note how that contrasts with george's description of obama as "the most pro-abortion candidate of either major political party in history."

apparently the professor was once able to maintain objectivity in his academic pursuits but has more recently abandoned that ethical stance in his political activities.

too bad.

99% vs parasites
here come the manipulative exploiters

with tea pottiers claiming they make up half of the wall st protesters, i guess i shouldn't be surprised to see insidious attempts to use the #ows movement to advance profiteering agendas. it's fertile ground. just look at wikipedia:

An October 11 poll showed that 54% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the protests, compared to 27% for the Tea Party movement,[23] and up from 38% in a poll conducted October 6–10.[24] An October 12–16 poll found that 67% of New York City voters agreed with the protesters and 87% agreed with their right to protest.[25]

what marketing pro wouldn't love to exploit numbers like those?

enter mike dillard, who sells pro-capitalist moneymaking. mike flew to NYC, went to zuccotti park, and figured it all out in a single hour:

Walking the grounds for the next hour, I did my best to identify the real mission and purpose of the protestors…

Were they here to end the Fed? Bring the banks to justice? Impeach politicians? Demand the end of Capitalism and a move to Communism?

The answer is… All of the above.

I am at a loss for words to describe the variety of goals, opaqueness of mission, and diversity of people…

There were the educated technophiles who are most likely the crew feeding the OWS social media sites…

yes, the answer is "all of the above" yet the mission is opaque, and tho he says he's "at a loss for words", dillard managed to put together a couple thousand of them, concluding with

If there was a message that was seen most often during my visit to OWS, it was that the 99% wanted to bring down the 1%.

The poor are looking to blame the rich. The poor are looking for their Robin Hood.

This is a very dangerous goal when used as a blanket theme because it does not account for the critical distinction of how that money was made, and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding as to how individual prosperity is created in general.

The vast majority of wealthy individuals have become rich by providing over-whelming value to the world through the creation of products and services in a free market. This is capitalism, and this is the primary reason why the United States has enjoyed more prosperity than any other nation in history.

What the protestors need to realize is that they’re not protesting the wealthy. They’re protesting corruption and the accumulation of wealth by the government, banks, and select corporations through out-right fraud and theft.

It is not the 99% against the 1%. It is the people of the world against the corrupt.

Ultimately, bringing these people to justice will only serve as a temporary solution. You can remove the tumor, but if you continue to smoke, the cancer will return.

True, lasting change can only be accomplished when each of us takes responsibility for our decisions and our actions.

We must educate ourselves in the ways of money, or that money will be stolen.

We must educate ourselves in the ways of food and health, or we will find ourselves eating genetically modified fillers covered in poison once again.

And we must educate ourselves in the ways of value creation and a work ethic, or find ourselves and our children slaves to debt and dependent upon food stamps.

Teaching the people of the world how to fish for themselves once again is the mission of The Elevation Group, and if you have not yet joined us, I invite you to learn more by clicking here…

the link gets you a video and a brief bio that tells of the $20 million he's made, the million entrepreneurs he's recruited from 65 countries, and how 4 months ago "he walked away from everything in order to share the urgent message" that we need to sign up for his free webinar so he can sell us his get rich scheme.

if you skip the link you can read several hundred comments from dillard's fans, ranging from subjective fawning to superficial analysis, with very few exceptions.

i posted a few comments that didn't support dillard's thesis. you won't find them. when i checked after less than 48 hours, no trace remained. i just posted one more. bet it's gone soon too.

really good sports bra?

i've just discovered how entertaining my inbox can be.

you know the ads in the sidebar? the one about going back to school, with the female runner?

well, i just happened to move my mouse pointer over it, and she started to move REALLY FAST.

of course it's just a loop, so she really only takes two steps and they repeat endlessly, but the animation gives the illusion that she's running hard for as long as you want her to.

but here's what i find so fascinating (& i admit this likely says more about me than about anything else): every part of her, even her head, moves round like crazy, but her boobs don't bounce at all.

where my white lettering went

to understand, you must return with us now to the thrilling days of yesteryear, the early years of ww2, those unenlightened times when advertisers thought nothing of exploiting patriotism to sell products [not like now, no-o-o-o!], when perhaps the best-known slogan on radio was "lucky strike green has gone to war!"

the pentagon no longer needs green pigment as it did then, so i'm going green! i'm going renewable, sustainable, and eco-friendly. i'm going to improve well-being and social equity while reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. i'm even going to confess i plagiarized most of the preceding sentence (but i won't tell you where from, because then it wouldn't be plagiarism).

yes, my fellow americans, nonamericans, unamericans, and antiamericans, you guessed it. what i'm saying is this is war! you didn't guess it? oh. well, just take my word for it, will ya?

ok. where was i? oh, yeah. this is war! uh....

damnit! i've lost my train of thought. this isn't working at all.

how 'bout if we forget about a deal and just raise the debt ceiling? why do we need a deal, anyway? just raise the damn thing and get it over with.

then we can really fight about taxes and spending!

national republican congressional committee gets punked!

i never even heard of the nrcc till they somehow snuck their push poll "state of the nation survey" thru my firewall, but i'm almost sad to see what idiots those gop fundraisers are. take a look:
Question 6: Are you aware that only 10 percent of President Obama’s cabinet level appointees have real world private sector work experience – the lowest percentage of any president in the past 109 years?
well, that got my attention. i'll give 'em credit for that.

it took about 3 seconds to find their claim labeled "false" (twice!) on politifact and another 3 or so to find this solid debunk from november 2009!

& the nrcc is spreading that claptrap more than a year and a half later!

so once again we get what's becoming the eternal question:

are gops intentionally lying
just too lazy
to check their facts

yeah! ri-i-i-ight!

big lie alive and, well,...
The CBO, the Congressional Budget Office has said that Obamacare will kill 800,000 jobs.
—Michele Bachmann in debate in New Hampshire
politifact's truth-o-meter rates it barely true. analysis here.

as far as i can tell, the 800k myth originated here, here, here, here, here, here or here.

i don't know which was actually first. the point is reverb keeps it going and growing, and it grew way beyond what i linked above, as you can see in over 40,000 search results here. david brock calls it the republican noise machine, which is his book title.

the washington post's "fact checker" column provides another debunk of the claim, along with more on a bunch of untruths in last night's debate, here. you may want to look at yesterday's column too.

and here are the debate analyses from factcheck.org and politifact.com

paranoia strikes deep
(you can't make this stuff up)
seriously damaged

hoo boy! off come the gloves! radical right's real agenda revealed at last!

just got the following eml from townhall.com

and this guy calls himself the public advocate of the US?!

oh, man! what GRANDEUR! what PERSECUTION!

where are the guys in the white coats when you need them?!

[showing text only]:
Dear Pro-family American,

The Radical Homosexuals infiltrating the United States Congress have a plan:

Indoctrinate an entire generation of American children with pro-homosexual propaganda and eliminate traditional values from American society.

Their ultimate dream is to create a new America based on sexual promiscuity in which the values you and I cherish are long forgotten.

I hate to admit it, but if they pass the deceptively named “Student Non-Discrimination Act,” that’s exactly what they’ll do.

Better named the “Homosexual Classrooms Act,” its chief advocate in Congress is Rep. Jared Polis, himself an open homosexual and radical activist.

That’s why I need you to act quickly -- right away -- to protect our nation’s youth.

I have prepared the official “Protect Our Children’s Innocence” Petition to Congress for you to sign.

Please click here to sign it right away so I can rush it to the Capitol with thousands more.

You and I must defeat this disastrous legislation.

You see, the Homosexual Classrooms Act contains a laundry list of anti-family provisions that will:

*** Require schools to teach appalling homosexual acts so “homosexual students” don’t feel “singled out” during already explicit sex-ed classes;

*** Spin impressionable students in a whirlwind of sexual confusion and misinformation, even peer pressure to “experiment” with the homosexual “lifestyle;”

*** Exempt homosexual students from punishment for propositioning, harassing, or even sexually assaulting their classmates, as part of their specially-protected right to “freedom of self-expression;”

*** Force private and even religious schools to teach a pro-homosexual curriculum and purge any reference to religion if a student claims it creates a “hostile learning environment” for homosexual students.

And that’s just the beginning of the Homosexual Lobby’s radical agenda.

In fact, it will set them up to ram through their entire perverted vision for a homosexual America.

My friend, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this is not a fight we can afford to lose.

That’s why Public Advocate is leading the fight against this immoral legislation.

This is a battle for the survival of American values and the fact is, there’s no time to waste.

The Homosexual Classrooms Act will turn America’s schools into indoctrination centers and its classrooms into social laboratories -- and they’re pulling out all the stops to pass it.

You see, they’ve disguised the bill’s wicked purpose behind an innocent name: “The Student Non-Discrimination Act.” Not only that, but they’re waiting to introduce this legislation in order to keep it under the radar.

The Homosexual Lobby knows that if pro-family Americans like you and me have time to alert the public of their radical agenda, they’ll have no hope of success.

Trump--the billionaire real estate tycoon and reality TV figure who is flirting with a 2012 presidential run--again sought to suggest that Obama was not born in the United States. "Birther" activists on the right have circulated the unsubstantiated claim in an effort to depict Obama's presidency as the outgrowth of a shadowy, constitutionally illegitimate conspiracy.

The birther position has been thoroughly debunked, and it hasn't gained traction within the journalistic mainstream. But Trump has nonetheless been on a media blitz in recent weeks promoting it.

When the issue came up on "Today"--which airs on the same network as Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice"--Vieira didn't exactly hold his feet to the fire.

"His grandmother in Kenya said he was born in Kenya and she was there and witnessed the birth," said Trump, reiterating a claim that has been proven false, as Vieira sat by silently. (You can watch the exchange in the clip above.)

Critics took note.

"Trump simply steamrolled over her challenges, for instance, on Hawaii's policy as to what birth documents it makes available," writes Time's James Poniewozik. "But she also let him make the claim that Obama's grandmother said she saw him born in Kenya--an old, and long-debunked, chestnut of birthers that ranks up there with the fake Mombassa birth certificate--without questioning it. So now millions of Today viewers are invited to take it as fact."

A spokeswoman for the "Today Show" did not respond to a request seeking comment on whether Vieira felt that she had adequately pressed Trump on his claims. But judging by how some of her peers in TV news have handled Trump in the same situation, she appears to have failed.

Take, for instance, conservative Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, who had Trump on his prime time show several weeks ago, and was well prepared to spar with his guest on the birther issue.

"There were two announcements the week [Obama] was born [in his native Hawaii] in both Honolulu newspapers saying that he was born. That is impossible to make happen if he had not been born in the hospital," said O'Reilly, incredulously. "What is he, baby Jesus? There was a sophisticated conspiracy to smuggle that baby back into the country?"

Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol earned a whopping $262,000 for her teen pregnancy prevention work in 2009.
let's see now, she qualified for the job by getting pregnant as a teen?

no. that can't be it....

In the midst of global climate change talks last December, a top Fox News official sent an email questioning the "veracity of climate change data" and ordering the network's journalists to "refrain from asserting that the planet has warmed (or cooled) in any given period without IMMEDIATELY pointing out that such theories are based upon data that critics have called into question."

The directive, sent by Fox News Washington managing editor Bill Sammon, was issued less than 15 minutes after Fox correspondent Wendell Goler accurately reported on-air that the United Nations' World Meteorological Organization announced that 2000-2009 was "on track to be the warmest [decade] on record."

This latest revelation comes after Media Matters uncovered an email sent by Sammon to Fox journalists at the peak of the health care reform debate, ordering them to avoid using the term "public option" and instead use variations of "government option." That email echoed advice from a prominent Republican pollster on how to help turn public opinion against health care reform.

now that i've read the "pledge pocket card" i see the diabolical genius behind the gop pledge: they know they'll never have to follow through on much, if any, of it!

that's because even if they win both houses of congress they won't get a big enough majority to get it past a senate filibuster (unless they win all 37 races!), and they certainly won't have the 67 votes needed to override a presidential veto.

all they'll have to do to explain why they haven't kept their pledge is blame it on the dems, something they always get away with, most likely because they can at will set up a media drumbeat on FOX news, talk radio, and rightwing newspapers like the wall street journal and the NY post, doggone it, darn right, you betcha!

DEARBORN, Mich. – There's a swirl of activity in a spacious, modern kitchen as final meal preparations are made.

An older man tries to swipe a felafel off an appetizer plate but instead gets a loving hand slap from a woman. The happy, well-dressed guests move to a table full of food in a dining room adorned with Middle Eastern wall-hangings.

It's an inviting, if idealized, dinner party scene from any Arab-American home — at least that's what the CIA seeks to convey in the first television commercial of its kind. The agency, in turn, hopes it's an inviting message to U.S. Arabs.

"Your nation, your world," a male voice says with a Middle Eastern accent, as the frame moves outside and pans out to show the party through a window of a gleaming, high-rise building. In seconds, the shot zooms out to an image of the U.S. from space. "They're worth protecting.

"Careers in the CIA."

The commercial, which the agency plans to debut on mainstream and ethnic TV stations and Web sites nationwide within the next few months, represents artistic and technological leaps for the agency....

from the inbox

There's been a lot of media coverage about organized mobs intimidating lawmakers, disrupting town halls, and silencing real discussion about the need for real health insurance reform.

The truth is, it's a sham. These "grassroots protests" are being organized and largely paid for by Washington special interests and insurance companies who are desperate to block reform. They're trying to use lies and fear to break the President and his agenda for change.

Health insurance reform is about our lives, our jobs, and our families -- we can't let distortions and intimidation get in the way. We need to expose these outrageous tactics, and we're counting on you to help. Can you read these "5 facts about the anti-reform mobs," then pass them along to your friends and family?
5 facts about the anti-reform mobs

    1. These disruptions are being funded and organized by out-of-district special-interest groups and insurance companies who fear that health insurance reform could help Americans, but hurt their bottom line. A group run by the same folks who made the "Swiftboat" ads against John Kerry is compiling a list of congressional events in August to disrupt. An insurance company coalition has stationed employees in 30 states to track where local lawmakers hold town-hall meetings.

    2. People are scared because they are being fed frightening lies. These crowds are being riled up by anti-reform lies being spread by industry front groups that invent smears to tarnish the President's plan and scare voters. But as the President has repeatedly said, health insurance reform will create more health care choices for the American people, not reduce them. If you like your insurance or your doctor, you can keep them, and there is no "government takeover" in any part of any plan supported by the President or Congress.

    3. Their actions are getting more extreme. Texas protesters brought signs displaying a tombstone for Rep. Lloyd Doggett and using the "SS" symbol to compare President Obama's policies to Nazism. Maryland Rep. Frank Kratovil was hanged in effigy outside his district office. Rep. Tim Bishop of New York had to be escorted to his car by police after an angry few disrupted his town hall meeting -- and more examples like this come in every day. And they have gone beyond just trying to derail the President's health insurance reform plans, they are trying to "break" the President himself and ruin his Presidency.

    4. Their goal is to disrupt and shut down legitimate conversation. Protesters have routinely shouted down representatives trying to engage in constructive dialogue with voters, and done everything they can to intimidate and silence regular people who just want more information. One attack group has even published a manual instructing protesters to "stand up and shout" and try to "rattle" lawmakers to prevent them from talking peacefully with their constituents.

    5. Republican leadership is irresponsibly cheering on the thuggish crowds. Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner issued a statement applauding and promoting a video of the disruptions and looking forward to "a long, hot August for Democrats in Congress."

It's time to expose this charade, before it gets more dangerous. Please send these facts to everyone you know. You can also post them on your website, blog, or Facebook page.

Now, more than ever, we need to stand strong together and defend the truth.

trick or treat

questions to

senator mccain, if you become president, will you pardon your predecessor? [and thus play ford to bush's nixon?]

senator obama, when you say this isn't many americas, it's the "united STATES of america," don't you think it might be a bit more effective to say "...UNITED states of america"? [i know you know it's not all in the wrist. this time it's in the stress.]

anybody in the reproductive rights movement, instead of always saying "a woman's right to choose," why don't you once in a while say "a woman's LIBERTY"? [they're the same thing, after all....]

americans who plan to vote against obama, i'm sure many of you are not racists, so do you REALLY want to vote against the guy racists will vote against? [the opponent of my opponent is my ally, so the ally of my opponent is my opponent, no? or should i say "enemy" and "friend" instead of "opponent" and "ally"?]

trick or treat?

more on screwy captions

i think computers closed caption typists use must be programmed to enter frequently-used phrases automatically to speed up the job.

bad idea.

yesterday on c-span2 i heard an interviewed author say something like: teheran sees itself as a hedge against american strategy.

but the closed caption said: teheran sees itself as a healthcare provider against american strategy.

i quoted from memory, so i might not've gotten it exactly, but the main difference is what it was, so i think you see what i mean.

the captions very often have mistakes, and the typos often make the dialogue unintelligible to hearing-impaired viewers or even reverse the meaning by adding or omitting a negative.

it doesn't happen just on noncommercial tv. i've seen plenty of ads with messed up closed captions, including political ads.

you'd think sponsors and candidates would want deaf viewers to be able to read their messages, wouldn't you?
