I'm not a fan of Che Guevara, mainly because of his behavior after the Cuban revolution, but I have a tee shirt with his likeness on it, because I like it (the t-shirt), which I bought at a flea market in Ecuador. The "pick and choose" mentality of marketers such as Target is simply idiotic. If they were going to pull off the shelves everything that might offend someone, they'd be out of business, and fast. What stupidity.
ReplyDeleteWhat strikes me as funny, is that the image is of an Andy Warhol Serigraph. He did similar prints of Marilyn Monroe and Mao Zedong and if we can say Warhol was about anything, he was probably about a commentary on mass merchandising and the culture of celebrity in the 20th century, not about producing graphic flattery of famous people.
ReplyDeleteOf course the shallow people who go around banning things and getting gloriously offended at images for the purpose of elevating their anger to a virtue don't know art from shinola.
I'm also amazed that someone got permision to use the image in the first place. The Warhol Estate keeps a very tight control over his work. It must have cost a bundle to use it.
as the saying goes: u cn't repeal the laws o supply n demand....
